Who We Are

NTU Film Society is a club dedicated to sharing the love of film watching, attracting both cinephiles and casual viewers alike. No matter which aspect of film interests you—whether it's watching, making, critiquing or discussing films—you'll have the opportunity to develop your skills and connect with like-minded individuals!

Mission

Through three tenets of Film Appreciation, Film Criticism, and Filmmaking, NTU Film Society aims to provide the tools necessary to allow for considerations towards a life in and with film.

Activities

  • Film Appreciation

    - Film discussions at WKW Lecture Theatre / NS LTs / SS LTs

    - Selection specially curated by our programmers, with consideration for diversity and holistic representation, as well as taking into account members' feedback

    - Past years' discussion include Chicago (2002), In the Mood For Love (2000), Eraserhead (1977), The Lobster (2015), Coraline (2009), Joyland (2022), Perfect Blue (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), Shirkers (2018), Bottoms (2023), Fantastic Planet (1973), Pop Aye (2017), La Chimera (2024), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), and more!

    - Main sessions: Biweekly on every odd school week (Thu, 6:30pm-9:30pm)

    - Educational Ancillary sessions: Third week of every month (Mon, 6:30pm-9:30pm)

  • Lab: Film Criticism

    Interested in pursuing something more with film? Join the Film Criticism Lab at NTU Film Society to give yourself the chance to consider a more meaningful interaction with films and cinema! Participants of the Labs would need to be open-minded, collaborative, and resourceful. Only a few slots available.

    - Focused on the writing and creation of cultural criticism pieces to reflect upon works of art.

    - Workshops will be run by our Editors-in-Chief to facilitate your writings directly. Guest speakers will also be invited.

    - All participants will need to focus on writing or creating pieces of criticism on a fortnightly basis.

    Takes place from 5pm to 7pm on the dates below.

    Dates for the Semester: 4 September, 18 September, 9 October, 23 October, 6 November (Thursday).

  • Lab: Film-making

    Interested in pursuing something more with film? Join in the Filmmaking Lab (Screenwriting) at NTU Film Society to give yourself the chance to consider a more meaningful interaction with films and cinema! Participants of the Labs would need to be open-minded, collaborative, and resourceful. Only a few slots available.

    - Focused on the art and craft of screenwriting.

    - Guest workshops by filmmakers will share the experience more candidly.

    - Guest speakers will also be invited.

    - The final output at the end of Semester 1 will be a finished screenplay. Participants are expected to fulfil output markers from session to session.

    Takes place from 7.30pm to 10pm on the dates below.

  • Exposure: In-House Publication (Web & Print)

    - NTU Film Society’s industry-recognised film publication. We launched the first issue of Exposure Print in July 2025, and we are currently working on our second issue.

    - Our Web Publication is open for submissions from anyone and everyone; if you feel like you have some opinions or thoughts on films or any other media you’ve loved, hated, or just thought about, feel free to write in! (We are looking for word counts from about 800-1000 words).

    - We are also opening slots for Staff Writers, who will get exclusive opportunities (e.g. special screenings / free tickets to art events / film screeners) and a chance to participate in guest talks by professional writers or other relevant programming. Staff Writers are to contribute at least 1 article per month, and applicants are required to include at least 1 writing sample.

Main-Committee Recruitment

  • Programmers

    - Manages the Society's Film Appreciation activities

    - Plan an execute fortnightly programming activities for the entire Society

    - Innovate and curate unique experiences for each fortnightly activity

    - Research and acquire materials for the programme

    - Facilitate screenings and all flow of events

    - Liaise with Honorary-General Secretary to ensure relevant venue and logistics are booked and acquired 

  • Content Creators

    - Manages the Society's content and design output

    - Manages and updates all publicity materials for social media purposes across Instagram, LinkedIn, and any other relevant platforms

    - Assist the programming team in spearheading initiatives to ensure screening attrition

    - Design and publishes collaterals needed for screenings an other ancillary activities, such as posters

    - Design society-related and external publications, such as Exposure Print

    - Design and publishes all Society-related and external publications and communications, as needed

    - Manages and spearheads a content calendar for clear and consistent social media engagement

    - Interested applicants are encouraged to share their portfolio

FAQs

  • Yes. The membership fee is $12 for an academic year. The fees will go into funds for club matters like welfare and the running of events.

  • Film Appreciation happens on Thursdays on every odd school week from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. The meetings comprise a film screening and a discussion afterwards.

    The Film Criticism and Filmmaking Labs are on Thursdays every even school week. The Film Criticism Lab will take place from 5pm - 7pm, whereas the Filmmaking Lab will take place from 7:30pm - 10pm.

  • No! Feel free to join us whenever you are free for Film Appreciation!

    However, for those who are interested in signing up for the Film Criticism and Filmmaking Labs, do commit to all the lab sessions when possible, as we have allocated a number of resources for these sessions.
